deal. let's go live to our white house correspondent dan lothian. he's on the scene for us over at the white house. how did it go, dan? >> reporter: well, wolf, we've seen the president do this before in the past whenever he's locked in negotiations with lawmakers. he heads out on the road, either goes to a backyard or sits down around a dinner table to put pressure on congress. that's what he did today when he went to falls church sitting down with the santana family. their parents who also are employed live in the household with them. so if taxes do go up on middle class americans, the overall hit on that household will be $4,000. so they're very concerned, but they were quite happy. they said it isn't every day that the president comes by and hangs out at your house. the message the president was trying to drive home today was aimed directly at congress and using this backdrop to tell a personal story. >> for them to be burdened unnecessarily because democrats and republicans aren't coming together to solve this problem gives you a sense of the costs involved in very personal te

jessi jessica yellin. she's over at the white house with the very latest. the president seems pretty optimistic that it's within a few hours we could have a deal, right? >> reporter: wolf, the people i just spoke to here say they are no more or less optimistic than they were this morning. which is to say they are not cueing the confetti just yet. senator mitch mcconnell, the republican leader on the hill, is still talking to the white house. the white house is in constant contact with the democratic leader harry reid. and they're working towards some kind of an agreement. but the white house has all along had -- during these past few days, been somewhat hopeful that they could reach some kind of agreement in the senate. all along, they have been far less optimistic that there would be an agreement that can get through the house. only because from the white house's perspective, from democrats' perspective broadly, they've been let down time and again by speaker boehner. they've never been able to reach a deal with speaker boehner. and now with this news that the house is going to be b

at 9:30 or so this morning, shots rang out as at least one gunman entered that school and that gunman is dead. as police have been telling us now, 20 children dead, 18 of them dead at the scene. and in addition to that, six adults are also dead, including the principal of the school. we understand that yet another adult was found dead at another location that police are not officially disclosing as of yet. and we are told that the mother of the suspected shooter, who is also dead at the scene, was also killed. she is a teacher and she was also killed at that school, according to our law enforcement sources. in addition to this, we are also told by our sources that another person is being questioned at this time but is not being called a suspect right now, and also that person is not being identified, wolf. so while the school is being called secure and safe by law enforcement authorities right now, they are -- they still have a lot of investigating to do. they have not officially released the name of the shooter or the other person being questioned or the names of any of the vi

was quite active with mayors on the gun issue at the time that the assault weapons ban was expiring. and was quite active with mayor bloomberg on other issues around guns. i've been told someone submitted that. i'm not sure that was an actively discussed item. i don't believe so. we get a lot of letters in the office. most of them never get to me quite frankly. so i can't tell you that didn't happen. i can only tell you that supports a person's opportunity to hunt. and to meet the strictest definition of the second amendment, but beyond that i think this thing has gotten way out of control. and the idea that assault weapons are as plentiful in the united states with a capacity as large as they're available in the united states, including in connecticut, is not something i support. i think this whole issue of assault weapons and weapons that can easily be converted to a salt weapons is a question we really need to have in this country. obviously the discussion can begin about the size of the magazines, and i think that's a good discussion to have. i'd love to hear the people argue th

. i don't thing that's the issue at all, to tell you the truth. in fact, i want to say just the opposite. i'm a big believer that a group home or alternative placement is a far better way to assure positive outcomes in treating mental illness, drug addiction, and other maladies than trying to confine people to large institutions where they were generally -- actually, not generally, where they were historically underserved in our country. >> -- budget deficit deal apparently in the works -- >> i think there were discussions last week and discussions continued on friday. there are i think tentative understandings with the caucus leaders, the four caucus leaders, but that's tentative. they've not shared it with their members to the best of my knowledge. it's capable of being adjusted further. but i think we're on a road to having an agreement. whether, you know, where exactly that is, i've got to tell you, i've been busy with a couple other things. so ben barnes continues to have meetings with leaders. he'll continue to do that. i'd like to do it on a bipartisan basis. i think we s

hard on the men and women that work at the connecticut state police. what has it been like? >> it's been a horrible, tragic scene. the initial response was just horrific. the men and woman that risked their lives going in there trying to stop the aggression, trying to stop the shooting and carnage and rescue as many people as they could truly put their lives on the line but even more so, the faculty, the staff, the teachers that tried and did protect many of those children. there's good and bad but our hearts are just simply broken just due to the fact that 26 people died in that building. >> how are the men and women of the connecticut state police, the first responders, how are they doing? >> they are working through this. we provide counseling and employee assistance to them. they are human beings also but we have to work through these types of things. the day will come where we will sit down and truly hit a wall and have to really talk it out. but it's what they are trained to do and the men and women have risen to the occasion and they are working 24 hours a day and will contin

the end of the year staring at a crisis we should have dealt with literally months ago. make no mistake, the only reason democrats have been trying to deflect attention on to me and my colleagues over the past few weeks is they don't have a plan of their own that could get bipartisan support. the so-called senate bill that the majority leader keeps referring to passed with only democratic votes and despite his repeated calls for the house to call it, he knows he himself is the reason it can't happen. the paperwork never left the senate. so there's nothing for the house to vote on. as i pointed out before we took that vote back on july 25th, the democratic bill is, quote, a revenue measure that didn't originate in the house so it's got no chance whatsoever of becoming law, end quote. that's what i said back on july 25th. the only reason we ever allowed that vote on that proposal is i said at that time was that we knew it didn't pass constitutional muster. and the democrats were really serious, they would proceed to a revenue bill that originated in the house as the constitution r
